I thought that the characters who start as teenagers did not seem to grow and change with adulthood. May be the interactions between the main characters were actual, but to me they seemed stilted and unreal. The gay friend seemed stuck in a sexual hole--his banter was always sexual in nature. I think gay people have other things to talk about and other ways to relate to people. I guess I would call the characters one dimensional and I could not relate to any of them, so the story was less intense for me. I guess you either love Pat Conroy or you don't.
