I had great hopes for this book. It just never delivered on its promise. I felt bogged down with the characters lives without the desk that would connect the characters. I once owned a rolled top desk bought for me by my father. This piece of furniture is what drew me to the novel. Nicole Krauss does draw great characters, very three dimensional. Yoav and Leah, a sister and brother, with their father George Weisz, a very controlling man were magnificent in the novel. However, I wanted to hear more about the Nazi thievery of beautiful furniture and art. I think this part of Jewish History became lost behind the larger than life characters.

Nafiza I just got this from the library!

Jeffrey Paris [was Infinite Tasks] I am trying to figure out how "never delivered" and "bogged down" gets this book a 5-star rating. I was looking for a positive review, but it looks like even the 5-stars think it doesn't work!

Nafiza I couldn't finish it. It's such a far departure from her previous novel. And I'm disinclined to trust in the rating system here. They've misled me on more than one occasion.

Cedar Would suggest maybe you alter your five stars to correspond with your overall review?
