The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle tells the wonderful story of a young girl's struggles to shed herself of a proper ways and eventually find strength and home in a life amongst sailors. The story offers excellent opportunities to introduce or build foreshadowing skills with students. Females will probably enjoy reading this book because Charlotte goes against the "natural" ways of a female during the time period for which the book is written. There is also action and suspense in the novel that young men will enjoy as well. I think this is an excellent book to have available in the classroom library for students to read for pleasure.
