After coming off from her successful YA best-selling novel series, “Twilight”, Stephenie Meyer makes her adult novel debut with “The Host”.

Earth has been invaded by a race of aliens, known as “souls”. These souls implant themselves into the human body. Once implanted, the souls have access to all of their hosts’ memories and emotions. Since the invasion on Earth, nearly all humans have been implanted but some have resisted the invasion and have been hiding out doing whatever is necessary to stay alive and not be captured.

Melanie Stryder, her brother, and her boyfriend Jamie have been doing just that, staying alive.

Then the unthinkable happens, Melanie is caught on a mission and her body is taken over by a soul called “Wanderer”. Melanie‘s memories are very strong and she fights within herself to keep Wanderer from taking over completely. Wanderer gives in and Melanie convinces Wanderer to look for her brother and Jamie in the hot Arizona desert. After finally finding them, Wanderer begins to love Melanie’s bother like her own and with Melanie’s thoughts; she fights her body’s attraction to Jamie while her own personal feelings grow for another human named Ian. It’s a love triangle like you’ve never read before.

Stephenie Meyer has an amazing ability for detail. By discussing the invasion of other planets before Earth, you are able to visualize what it would be like to live as a soul on another planet. You begin to question humanity and what it really means to be “human”. This novel will make you wonder, if you were Melanie, could you grow to love someone whose species took over your body, your memories, and your planet for the good of their own kind?

This is an engaging read and will keep you reading into the early morning hours. I would highly consider buying this novel and adding it to your growing Stephenie Meyer collection.
