Skyfall (Saga of the Skolian Empire, #9)

This was kind if an old fashioned book, the lead characters were a bit too "Mary Sue" for my tastes personality-wise, but the reason I read it was that i heard the rest of this series by the author was a really great sic-fi epic, and from how she set up the world in this book so I'm definitely gonna give her series a try. It was also nice to see a romance in a sci-fi setting not make me cringe, so that was enjoyable.

This one isn't as good as some of the others in the series. The books with Roca's daughter Soz are more interesting (or at least I thought so). She's a less passive character than her mother, who was a bit too "perfect in every way" for my taste. My favorite so far, though, is The Last Hawk which is about Kelric and deals with gender role reversal. It had a very interesting matriarchal culture whose politics revolved around a complex game. It's one of my favorite books.

I also think the books with Soz are more interesting. (Primary Inversion is my favorite book of the series.)
Mary Sues are characters the author inserts that are blank/there to fill the shoes of the author. Bella/Twilight is a good example >.>. They are often how the author would like to be if they were inside their own book.

I hate when authors do that - it's so contrived and uncreative when done poorly. However, it can be done well, such as in Mark Twain's case when he wrote Tom Sawyer, for example.
