First line: "At first, the chill was a drowsy nibble at the distant and ragged edges of my awareness, raising goosebumps on the parts of my flesh bared to that spring night."
With a heroine named Mojo Sheepshanks, I just knew I was in for a good time with this book, and I was right. Mojo is a loner with a bleak past who takes herself not at all seriously. Throw in the fact that she can suddenly see the ghost of her ex-husband and her childhood cat and you have an outrageous story that is a lot of fun. The supporting cast of characters are excellent as well, including a sexy under-cover police officer, two adopted sisters who are as damaged and nutty as Mojo, and a farting basset hound. My one criticism of the book is that it actually included too many different story lines and these were often wrapped up with minimal fuss, so that I was left feeling slightly confused. However, I will hope it is a symptom of the beginning book in a complex series and hope the writing evens out. I am looking forward to more Sheepshanks adventures in my near future.
