** spoiler alert ** I very much enjoyed reading the Last Herald Mage trilogy. I particularly love the fact that the author presented teenage angst in all it's glory. Early on, much of Vanyel's angst stems from the fact that his parents didn't really understand or support him. But as the books later showed, Vanyel WAS self-centered in typical teenage fashion, and didn't understand his parents either.

What prevented me from loving the books is the lack of a developed villain.
It makes sense in this 1st book, in that the focus is really on Vanyel's own personal growth, and an outside antagonist isn't strictly necessary. So the main villain being tagged on like an after-thought wasn't really an issue.

However, the "big bad" Leareth, who's been built up through the entire trilogy, was very quickly disposed of. We learnt very little about his background or motivations. I just feel like that was a wasted opportunity and extremely anticlimactic.
