Read from September 24 to 26, 2010

This is a page turner that will keep you reading and will leave you wanting more. Spencer brilliantly delves into the psyche of his characters as he weaves their stories together with descriptive, insightful writing.

He explores a number of questions about the human condition. The main character commits a terrible crime in the heat of the moment that forever changes his life and the lives of the ones he loves. The main character is a skilled carpenter who lives by his own code and highly values freedom. He only pays in cash. He lives life on his schedule, ignoring deadlines and following impulses. His lifestyle is threatened by the crime he commits, the increasingly technological world (emphasized by the approaching Y2K) and encroaching suburban surroundings.

Perhaps my favorite character is Shep the dog, who is also linked to the crime.
