it was amazing

This was endlessly entertaining and a fascinating look at the life of Jessica Mitford, second youngest of a very extraordinary family. On publication the book caused arguments between Jessica and her family as some of them felt she had been harsh about them, presenting them in a bad light. This certainly does come through at times but i think JM was trying to emphasise just why she was so desperate to run away from home as soon as she could. Although a onesided account, then, it provides such a great insight into the eccentric, talented and outrageous Mitford family and is a joy to read. It does show that on leaving home, Jessica and Esmond were in fact very naive and had a lot to learn, and Esmond comes across as quite irritating at times.
