** spoiler alert ** The first half of this book was a solid 5. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style, the characters were entertaining and lifelike, the day to day marine biology research was exactly like it is in real life. Then the book got weird and all realism came to a screeching halt. It turns out some whales (not all) are boats used by half whale half people creatures and normal people who were assumed lost at sea but were actually captured by the whale people. They live in this deep below the surface world called Gooville where the Goo is alive. Yeah.. it got really strange. The writing style was still enjoyable but it lost me in the insanity factor so I bumped it down to a 3.. almost gave it a 2.
