The Unit is a deeply disturbing but incredibly thought provoking novel of a dystopian future. Its a future in which unmarried adults without family responsibilities (caring for children or parents) are sent to a medical reserve bank where they are subject to medical experiments, testing, and various organ donations (ultimately ending with a final donation.) What was fascinating to me was the main characters' back story. Dorrit (like many of us) reacted to the creation of the medical reserve bank with apathy when she was in her 20's - not believing that this law would ever affect her yet at 50, based on the choices she made though her adult life, she is deemed dispensable and sent to the second medical reserve bank.
