This was my first James Michener novel, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was from an author who seemed to crank 'em out one after another. I love his storytelling ability and found once I started reading I couldn't stop until I was done. I love learning about Afghanistan in the 1940s and the parallel tale of an American woman who chooses the wilds of nomadic Afghanistan over the security of home and hearth. I love how Michener made Ellen Jasper a strong character, not altogether likable or understandable but living on her own terms nonetheless.
