The ecology poems in this book focus on the pond habitat. They integrate information about insects, plants, microorganisms, fish, birds, frogs, turtles, and the food chain. Repetition, imagery, and form are strong features of the prose presented. The Caldecott honor illustrations are hand-colored woodcuts that compliment the setting and add visual detail. The blues, greens, browns, and purples used reinforce the text beautifully. (Prange has a degree in biology and a graduate certificate in natural science illustration.) The book begins with contents that lists the poem titles and ecology topics, and concludes with a glossary. Reference notes accompany each poem in the side-panels. This book is a rich resource for poetry, ecology, and artwork; it would be appropriate to share with children of various ages studying any combination of these subjects.
