** spoiler alert ** What starts as a pretty good finding-yourself-when-things-get-tough book devolves into to a tedious slog through Jane’s crappy life: her father walks out, her mother is relentlessly accusing and cold, her married thesis advisor and lover commits suicide, her boyfriend and father of her child cheats on her while cheating her out of her life's savings, her daughter is killed, and her suicide attempt is unsuccessful. No wonder Jane has turned into an unlikable, withdrawn, hostile and suspicious person. The novel then implodes completely when Jane turns into an amateur detective and not only finds a kidnapper, but takes him on with a conveniently located shovel!

Apparently revered in the UK and Paris, Douglas Kennedy isn’t widely read in the USA, and he’s not going to be added to my must-read list. I was angry to have wasted my precious reading time. Others loved it, so maybe it's just bad timing for me.
