** spoiler alert ** This book was very hard to put down. The author did a great job of creating a world and characters that feel very real. Even though you know from the beginning that many people are going to die, and even from the first chapter who some of those people are, I still dreaded each one. I really liked that it was based on a true story and that the author included notes at the end discussing what was true and what she made up in the book.

SPOILER: I'm going to try to make this spoiler as unspoiler-ish as possible. I had one small problem with the story. At the end, the side of Mompellion that was revealed when he told Anna the truth of his and Elinor's marriage did not feel right to me. It seemed very inconsistent with his actions throughout the book. It seemed to me that someone who felt that way would not have been so open minded about everything else.
