At the back of my mind this book kept reminding me of The Hunger Games. Max is the young heroine and reminds me a little of Katniss. Also the situation they are in seems to be controlled by someone outside themselves and they are in a "game" or a "test". But aside from that I enjoyed this book and look forward to continuing the series. I became interested in this series based on Nancy's review of Fang, which I believe is #4.

A group of 6 kids struggle to find their parents and try to stay alive after escaping from "The School" or the laboratory that "made" them. They are genetically altered humans with avian DNA. So, yes, these kids fly. They are constantly being chased by other mutant types that morph into wolves (which also reminds me of Hunger Games when they sent in morphing beasts at the end of the Game).
