Stark book, beautifully written. Highly critical of Sudanese during the Colonial period who emigrated to the West (Oxford, Cambridge) only to come back to Sudan to revitalize the country with a supposedly more intelligent outlook. The narration is brilliant: the narrator speaks mainly about the "enigmatic" Mustafa Sa'eed, but he himself was a member of the elite who went abroad for their studies, and the narrator has a chance to evaluate his character as well.

Though the novel is short, Salih says what he needs to say within a compact space, and the novel is richer for it.
