Prague

I'm still not so sure about Arthur Phillips. "The Song is You" was ultimately unsatisfying and somewhat aggravating. "Prague" was a more coherent book, and Phillips didn't cheat me on the ending the way he did in "TSiY", so I didn't finish the book and scream and throw it across the room, but there's something dodgy about Phillips. He's a talented writer but doesn't always seem too concerned about making sure his reader is actually satisfied or pleased with the way his books turn out. "Prague" is good. I liked it, enjoyed the interactions, the characters, thought the ironic title fit well, thought it was essentially a well-made book, HOWEVER... This does not mean I'm going to rush out and get the next Arthur Phillips book when it comes out, or that I feel compelled (as with authors I really like) to read the entire catalog. It's a shame to see such a talented writer completely fail to care about the reader in any meaningful fashion, and makes me want to be more careful as a writer to make sure that I don't do THAT...

Interesting thoughts. I think you're right about his attitude towards the reader. I did enjoy The Egyptologist, though.

Tried that one... just.. failed to interest me. Something about novels in the epistolary form leaves me rather cold. I just fail to find them interesting. Reminds me of reading guys like Richardson and Smollett in my "Origins of the Novel" class and THOSE guys make watching paint dry seem positively lively...
Hello, my one review-reader! Best wishes! got another couple reviews up recently, curious to see what ya think. Will be putting up another couple reviews in the next couple days. I dunno... having someone else read the reviews (who isn't actually in some way related to me) makes me feel less... isolated. So, I guess what I'm really saying is I hope you keep reading them!
