Toni is one of the great American writers. That much is true. As always, her prose is strong and beautiful. However, I could not connect with Jazz due to its chaotic nature. She wanted the novel to reflect Jazz--as in the musical genre. I know that she made the choice intentionally, and these things are extremely subjective. She pulled it off because she's scarily talented. That doesn't mean I enjoyed the novel, though. I enjoyed Sula, The Bluest Eye, and Tar Baby much more. I haven't read Beloved yet, but I think I'll enjoy that one as well.

That being said, there were several gorgeous passages in the novel (not that I expected otherwise), and it was extremely thought-provoking. I also enjoyed reading the foreword and learning about Toni's inspiration for Jazz.
