liked it
Read from September 17 to 29, 2010

I liked the medical-ethics premise. The author did her medical and legal research to make it work. She captured the dilemma well.

But the characters seemed a little under-done to me. Switching, each chapter, from one character's perspective to another, made it way too easy for the author to tell, rather than show. And when she did try to show something, it lacked subtlety - it was like she felt she had to hit us over the head or we wouldn't get it.

The book's romance was formulaic and predictable. And the explanation for Julia and the lawyer's breakup all those years ago defied believability.

As did the ending.

Anyway. A 500-page book that would have been better if it were 250 pages. An easy but mediocre read. I probably won't read anything else by Jodi Picoult.
