The book Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel was a surprisingly good book. I went into the book thinking I just needed a book for class, then I started reading and got caught up in a very original plot. Kenneth Oppel did a great job in a nicely paced book about a boy in a scientist family.
In Half Brother Ben’s family moves up to Canada for his Dad’s mysterious science experiment. When Ben gets there he is greeted by his mother with a baby, a baby chimp. His father is trying to teach the chimp named Zan sign language. Ben develops love for Zan and teaches him his first word- hug. The experiment is a breakthrough and Ben is at the center piece of it. At school, Ben is having fun and all is well with friends, David, Hugo Jane, Shannon and his crush Jennifer. Life is great until one day, the experiment may have gone wrong and Zan has to go. At the school dance everything goes wrong with Jennifer and his family is in constant argument. Everything Ben loves is going away and he has to fix it.
Half Brother is a great book about friendship, family and a bit of romance. It is a book for people who liked slow paced books, but if you keep reading you will like it. Kenneth Oppel made great characters and a great and original plot. Great book.
