This book is a great mix of almost normal reality with a little bit of fantasy thrown in...or is it the other way around? Terry Brooks takes a broken hearted lawyer from Chicago and sells him a Magic Kingdom. He gives his protagonist something to live for and something to fight for. Ben Holiday is suspicious of the validity of the sale at first but once he reaches Landover, he becomes a believer. Given an unsual asortment of companions, Ben must fight against the forces of evil in the forms of a dragon and a demon lord in order to remain Landover's king. Through Brooks writing, you really get a feel for the lonely Holiday and while you agree that spending a million dollars on a "Magic Kingdom" is crazy, at the same time, you see the rationality of the decision as the chance for Ben to "give himself back his life". I truly enjoy the fact that this story starts out in and visits Chicago. Terry Brooks was raised near the city and makes mention of places such as Soldier Field and Michigan Avenue, Miles goes to court in Crystal Lake and Ben flies out of O'Hare.
