Honestly, I found this book really depressing - much more so than other less realistic dystopian sci-fi. Probably this is in part because the problems described are so plausible in our real world. But also it was in part because the characters, including the main character, didn't seem to have much in the way of redeeming qualities that made them likeable. I wouldn't have minded if they were merely flawed, but when there is nothing to balance out the flaws of a failed parent - let alone two - or a narcicistic teen - I have a hard time caring about them. I felt for what they were going through only because I could well imagine the circumstances & I'm not a totally unfeeling clod. However, the characters did nothing to make me hope for them to find some good in their lives. Oh, and I truely hope the author is WAY off in her dates!
