** spoiler alert **
This was definitely a disappointment after reading other books by Christopher Moore. I think something happened when he moved to Hawaii, all that sun and sand dulled the edgy, liberal, urban wit that his time in San Francisco had finely tuned. Luckily, I think he's moved back to San Fran, so I think all will be well with the world again.
For the full spoiler version, the story centers on a marine biologist who finds himself swept up in a hidden, almost Altantian (but more creepy) underwater world where marine life and humans coexist (sometimes in the same creature as per the weird whale-human hybrid nymphomaniac things). The signature sarcasm is all there, but with out the depth of wit, it just comes across as belligerent, like the book is a rude sales person or something.
In a nutshell, I love the writer in general, and because of that, I definitely wouldn't recommend this one.
