This book, I believe is a pared down and (judging by the author's notes in the back) slightly reworded version of Swanson's novel Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer.

I bought this version via Scholatic Book Clubs (yay for working in a school), and found it to be thoroughly engaging.

The book follows the events just prior to Lincoln's assassination and the ensuing manhunt for those responsible for not only that event, but also the attack on Secretary of State Seward. The prose is fast paced (though doesn't stint on details) and lively enough to keep even the most reluctant of young readers engrossed. Add in the fact that the events surrounding the assassination and the resulting manhunt often played out in a manner so bizarre that one couldn't possibly be making them up, you have a winning formula for a nonfiction historical book.
