Mike Carey The Devil You Know Book One.
Felix Castor is a hardboiled gumshoe/exorcist, who never goes anywhere without his handy whistle, lock picks. He has a perchant for the wrong type of women. Always owes money to his long suffering landlady & has a past that he regrets everyday regarding Kate & his best waster friend Rafi, who is in a mental institution & spiritually merged with a manipulative powerful demon Asmodeus.

He's called on a job to simply banish a spirit that physically assualted an employee & it kicks off from there, an evil crime boss pimp, ghouls, lupes, soul sucking sucumbi & an intriguing puzzle that may end up with him dead.

Felix is pragmatic, very selfish, unapologetic with strong views on life. Brilliant characterisation of both the protagonist & surrounding supportiing characters.

If you are looking for a Harry Dresden book replacement it is not, but this character has a certain charm & word building & connections that made me laugh out loud, but also sit on the edge of my seat chewing my thumb.

Will definately be reading the second book in series which is Vicious Circle: A Felix Castor Novel after that little bombshell at the end.

Recommended.
