This prequel to the Lords of the Underworld series was nothing like I had expected (and not necessarily in a good way). Kadence, goddess of Oppression, was too whiney and unsure of herself. Geryon, the Guardian of the gates of Hell, was just gross. They spend more time worrying about each other than trying to solve the problem affecting them both. Their tragic romance was short and depressing.

Had I not read this story as part of a bundle of Lords of the Underworld novels, I would have been severely annoyed. The story has little to no bearing on the rest of the LotU world and could have been skipped.
