In this novel we follow Misty Wilmot who is struggling to keep her family afloat of financial devastation. Her husband is a comatose patient who is now living on life support after a failed suicide attempt. Misty loathes him for his attempt but still sees him as the love of her life. Misty is also a brilliant artist who has given up painting. Throughout the story Misty, despite everything, is constantly being pushed into painting again by the entire town in which she resides. It seems as if a surreal image is presented by the sheer desire everyone displays for her ability to paint. Eventually she finds her way back to her canvas only to find herself the focal point of a conspiracy she had never been aware of.
Written in true Palahniuk fashion of a dark and twisted satire, "Dairy" does not disappoint. The only non favorable comment I can share about this piece is that, as a reader one can feel that this female character was written by a male. The manner in which her descriptions of her surroundings was very masculine and emotions never factored into this piece. If Misty had be written as a male character it would have been believable.
