Read from September 14 to 15, 2010
I have a confession to make… But please don’t throw rotten tomatoes at me! PLEASE!
*in a tiny tiny voice* I *gulp* seriously gave Dark Lover, the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, umm, one star. *run and cower for cover*
I think I have a logical explanation on the one star. I seldom skim pages, but whenever there was a lesser talking, I just had to skip pages. Plus, I felt that the H/h were jumping on each other. I barely liked the romance, so the one star. Oh, please let me have friends left, after this review.
But now, after contemplating that I am abnormal since after the 12,552 people who rated Dark Lover, I go straight to the 1% who didn’t like it. So that makes me abnormal.
However, I don’t like being abnormal. I want to be normal. So I gave Lover Eternal a chance, since it means that I am giving a chance to jump on the hype and be “normal”. So, I pre-programmed my head that “I would like this” again and again. I really thought that hard. But flipping through the pages, it became easy, and I didn’t need the chant anymore. I was seriously liking what I was reading. That is what the power of thought can do. Oh heck! I admit, I also have to give praise to J.R. Ward for writing this splendidly. And seriously, my apologies for not liking the first book of the series. I am considering a re-read soon.
This book, I truly enjoyed. Rhage is not just smoking hot, but he’s sweet and dedicated as well.
Hmm, but why did I not give this book five stars? (1) The ending was just too good to be true. I know that this is a paranormal romance, but can’t we have a happy ending without ‘literal’ magic. (2) The spelling of the warriors are messed up for me, and I seriously think it wuold affhect my spehlling skhills frhom now ohn. (3) And the names of the lessers. What happens when there are more than 24 lessers introduced? What would she call them then? A1? B2? (4) My brother. It felt too redundant to me.
But why did I seriously like it? (1)I love the romance aspect of the book. Quick plot details ahead.Well, Rhage has been cursed by the Scribe Virgin. He could turn to a savage beast when he feels pain or any intense emotion. He needs an outlet, which are violence and sex. Well, that was until he met Mary Luce. Her voice could calm the beast inside him. He falls for her, and what I love is, he’s not ashamed to admit it. But the thing is, Mary is sick. But they work that out. (2) The bond between the brothers are cute. (3)Rhage is so *sigh*. (4)Bella and Zsadist are also a thing to look out for.
Well, definitely I’m amending my first opinions, recommending this to all paranormal romance readers and seriously hoping that my friends don’t hate me.

Duck Jasmin... *throws tomato* First off let me say bravo to you for having the courage too post this review. And its a great review too, gave me a chuckle. I'll still be your friend even though I'm one of those crazed, die hard BDB fans. I'm just sorry you didn't love it but you know everybody doesn't love everything. Thats what makes the world so interesting.

Tooo FUhNNY
Thanks everybody! At least i made u guys laugh. @buggy, have mercy w/ the tomato throwing. thanks. Dont worry I think I'm a reformed person. I really liked Rhage's story XD
@nissie, i howp so. XD
@Z, they are sweet. The ending was just too ironed out for me. XD
thanks again! *hides*
Great review, Jasmin. I won't throw rotten tomatoes at you because, well, I'm not a big BDB fan myself. I didn't hate any of the books I've read - the first five - but I didn't love them either. At the point I am in the series, I'm seriously considering stopping because I don't like the turn the series has taken.

Awesome review, Jasmine! Your secret is safe with me-because I gave Dark Lover two stars....& that was generous. Like Dina, I don't hate this series but I don't love it either. I'd pick up a book in this series if I saw it at Walmart but I'm not pulling my hair out waiting for the next book, ya know?I do think that Lover Eternal is one of the better books in this series, especially since it seems to have switched from PNR to UF. I love a good UF novel, but I like knowing thats what I'm getting into when I start a book.
Thanks everyone!@dina thanks! If you considering continuing, hope the series would have a miraculous turn about so u could enjoy them more :D
@lethal, at least im not alone. The secret is all out and we should be scared out of our wits. There's never any shortage of rotten tomatoes. I really enjoyed this one, glad I gave it another chance *ninja*
@auntee, yes i think I will. There's something about Zsadist that piques my curiosity :D
Funny review.I'm a huge BDB fan, but I when I first read Dark Lover, I read the first two chapters, put the book down, and didn't come back to it after two months. (I was not on GR then, and had no previous idea about the BDB books, since I picked up Dark Lover out of the library sale bin, just because I got attracted by its shiny red cover). Then I finished it, was not really impressed, picked up Lover Awakened and got hooked. Went out to look for Lover Eternal, couldn't find it, and instead end up reading Lover Revealed. By the time I got my hands on Lover Eternal, I was already a BDB fan.
Hilarious review, Jasmin. I liked Dark Lover a lot, but it's not my favorite. BDB is one of those things you love obsessively, like, or hate obsessively. No judgments for where each person fits into those categories coming from me. To each their own.
@yz, thanks! I try reading things in order. Wow, what a relief to find someone who didn't really like the 1st book much. But I'm sticking through the series :D@danielle, whats ur favorite BDB book? Im intrigued. :D
I agree with Danielle. Either you love them, or hate them. I really like the books but I can't even tell you why. For the first few books, I skipped the Lesser parts because they were just plain stupid to me. I think that enhanced my reading pleasure. LOL!
I didn't like JM in the book before lover mine because he acted like a petulant little boy. Lover Mine was very good.
I agree with you AH watching JM grow up was interesting. He was a lovely character in his first few books and then he was just annoying, a bratty little boy. Complaining, drinking and Oh poor me-ing Thanks goodness he finally manned up.
Jasmin you are too funny! We will always be friends! I'm glad you liked the second one better. I love Z so much, can't wait for you to get to his book. And V's book- so good! You have some good ones coming up. But the BDB is not for everyone, just like any other series- you like what you like. But you are so cute about it!
@ah, yeah, i absolutely hated book1, but I'll be doing a re-read. and i loved the next book, but there were just some things that stopped me from giving it 5.@danielle, I guess that would take me a while before I reach lover mine. XD
@buggy, i havent reached the part where he gets anoying? Is this series ended? or are there more coming? XD
@fran, thanks so much. I'm kinda excited for the next book. Can't wait to finish my challenges and start up new ones. I'm definitely putting the 3rd book on it. Thanks for not turning ur back on me. LOL I expected myself to be covered w/ tomatoes but I guess Im unscathed since i'm half ninja :D
Ah Zadist, Totally agree with you UMD. Lover Awakened is one of my all time favourite books (you know the ones you take with you to the desert isle)He is just... heartbreaking and delicious
Buggy, I think that's what Z's draw is, what makes him so attractive. He was so tortured, so tormented... like Phury said, he wasn't broken, he was ruined. For me, that's what makes him so, so worthy of my love.
Jasmin wrote: "Can't wait to read Z's book. XD"And I can't wait to hear what you think!!! The WARDen has said, over and over, that Z is her favorite brother - no surprise there as far as I'm concerned. She also has said that his is the only book she'll never re-read. It was very, very sad.
when we say warden? are we talking about JR Ward?Is she torturing herself on not reading about her favorite brother? that is sad.

Jasmin, Loved your very honest review, which also made me chuckle. ^_^I am a huge BDB fan but I have to admit that I didn’t love the first book either! I gave it 3 stars on my first read. But I changed it to 4 stars after re-reading once I read up til book 7. I think, because by then, I just loved the Brothers and I loved re-visiting the beginning.
Anyway, while I only just liked Dark Lover, I kept hearing about the to-die-for tortured hero, Zsadist, (and also about Vishous) and I just had to keep going to experience them! And then I found that I really loved Rhage’s book and just fell for all the Brothers.
But Zsadist is AH-MAH-ZING!! His book is hard to read, though, because of what happened to him. I can see why it would be just too hard for J.R. Ward to re-read his book again. It just tears my heart to pieces every time I read the scenes of what he endured. Did I mention that I am sooooo in love with Z? ^_^
And I have a confession to make, I also tended to skim the lesser parts. It wasn’t til the later books that I actually properly read the lesser scenes.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your journey with the Brothers.
Wow! Okay. I haven't read these yet, but my sister has and she has told me repeatedly, that when I do, Zsadist is hers and I can't have him. I told her sure, I don't care. But after following this thread, I may have to fight her!! :):)
Nissie, you shouldn't have made that promise! Though your sister can't stop how you feel, right? ^_^

LOL Nissie! Zsadist is the my ultimate fave tortured hero, and definitely one of my all time fave heroes. If you like them tortured, you'll love him! ^_^
I really do! I guess I'm kind of a tortured soul myself lol! I'm looking forward to these book more everyday. :)
Nissie, I'm a tortured soul myself, too! ^_^ Which is why I love the tortured heroes in my books, but in real life I need the happy, confident guy, which is what my hubby is. Just bear in mind that Dark Lover is the weakest of the series, Nissie, and persist if you have the same 1-star experience that Jasmin had! You definitely need to read the books in order.

Jasmin wrote: "(1) The ending was just too good to be true. I know that this is a paranormal romance, but can’t we have a happy ending without ‘literal’ magic."Jasmin, I get your point on the ending, but because in J.R. Ward's vampire world, vampires are not "turned" through a bite but are born, where there is a vampire-human pairing, the only way for there to be a HEA of centuries as opposed to a human's decades, there needs to be some "magic" involved. I think it's the limitation of the world she created. It's not like other vampire books where the human can choose to become a vampire as well, to be with their love. Would you rather there have been a tragic ending to Lover Eternal?
Also, I think the ending to Lover Eternal revealed aspects to a certain character who you will come to curse the more and more you get to know her.
Oh, and you'll get used to the spelling and the "my brother" and the other BDB lingo, true. ^_^
I'm glad you have a good hubby! :) I don't know what that's like lol! Not that I have a bad one now, just not one at all yet. I'm trying to attain them all, so I can start at the first of the year and read them straight through. I live in a small town with one small bookstore, so a lot of things are just available here. I have to search online for most everything I get.

I'm very thankful for my hubby. I hope you find the hubby that's right for you, Nissie! I live in Australia and books are so expensive here, that it's much cheaper for me to order my books online. I order most of my books from The Book Depository because of the free shipping.
It's a good idea to get all the books so if you do join the obsessed ranks, you can read them all one after the other. ^_^
I'm sure I will! I just hope it's before I'm so old I've forgotten what to do with one lol!Do they have new or used books? I'm not really all that picky. I just want to get them. A lot of places I buy from have good prices on their books, but they rob you with the shipping prices.
I really do want to have them all before I start. It drives me insane to have to wait! :)

The Book Depository has new books but they also connect to AbeBooks which sell used through various sellers. The new books through The Book Depository have free shipping but the used books don't. The used usually end up being about the same for me because of the shipping to Australia, so, I usually get the new ones. I only buy used when I they are out-of-print books. Here's the link to The Book Depository, Nissie, if you want to check it out:
http://www.bookdepository.com/
And you can change the currency setting on the top righthand corner.
What country are you from, Nissie?

No worries, Nissie. Hope it proves useful for you. ^_^Nice to meet you, sweet little southern gal! I'm a Eurasian from Malaysia living in Australia with an apparently indiscernible accent! Boy, was that a mouthful! LOL
Okay, I better stop highjacking Jasmin's review. LOL
LOL! I'd love to hear it! I have a very distinctive accent, I'm afraid! :)Nice to meet you, too!
Sorry, Jasmin!!

My accent is not great to listen to but some people have described it as "indiscernible". It's a result of growing up in Malaysia with Malay, Indian, Chinese and Indigenous influences, watching tonnes of American TV, listening to my English accented grandparents, and now living in Australia - I have a very confused accent! I seem to unconsciously imitate whoever I'm talking to. Oh, and now that I'm married to a Filipino, I'm influenced by his family's accents, too. Oh dear! LOLI think southern accents are cute!
Yes, sorry Jasmin!
Well, thank you! My sons tell me I talk different depending on who I'm talking to. I've never really noticed it, but maybe I do the same thing! You DO have a lot of different influences going on there. I'm sure it's delightful, though! :)
Jasmin, yes, the WARDen is J.R. Ward, and the reason she can't/won't read Z's book again is because of how horribly painful it is. UniquelyMoi<----- Lesser Skimmer.
Well, until more recently anyway. The lessers became much more interesting once a certain someone got involved with them.
Looks like most of us skimmed until the more interesting Lesser came into the picture! LOL So, don't feel bad for skimming the lesser "Lesser" parts, Jasmin. ^_^
