Blankets is a poignant true life story of a sensitive, young man's troubled childhood and teenage years. Thompson explores his (often hilarious) relationship with his younger brother Phil whom he shared a room with growing up. He delves into his complicated relationship with religion; he is at once plagued by guilt and obligation, only later to renounce his faith altogether. And then we witness his budding relationship with Raina, a complex girl whom he falls in love with. The graphic novel format of Blankets skillfully lends itself to the myriad of emotions experienced by Thompson. Readers who enjoyed Stitches by David Small will also enjoy the heart-achingly revealing memoir of Blankets.
