What appears to be a simple case of murder-suicide takes a sudden twist and puts Chief Inspector Alan Banks, his associates, friends and even mere contacts in the investigation into jeopardy.

Banks refuses to be put off despite warnings and threats from secret government agencies with their own agenda. Good characterization, a gripping plot, lots of twists and turns.

In addition to an admirable protagonist, Peter Robinson provides Banks with an interesting team of regular characters, including Annie Cabbot, Winsome Jackman and the rookie officer nicknamed Harry Potter.
