Winston's War: Churchill, 1940-1945
by Max Hastings

I thought Hastings gave an excellent account of a complicated man in the midst of a maelstrom who though no cardboard hero rose to the task in a way that few could.
Hastings lets us in on more warts than most Churchillians, but in balance. Two things Hastings accomplishes better than most accounts of WWII is a clearer emphasis on the incredible sacrifices of Russia in 1943 and that fact that Churchill was out of office when the Pottsdam conference was still in progress.
