Gaines tells the story of the shooting of a white Louisianan farmer, presumably shot by one of eighteen black men who claim to have done it, from the perspective of multiple people involved in the incident. It's an interesting storytelling device, but it got old fairly quickly. I thought the book would have made a better play or screenplay than a novel.
