really liked it
Read in July, 2007

I was absolutely thrilled to find another Elizabeth Strout novel, and I remain unsure whether my preference for Amy and Isabelle has to do with it being a stronger effort or simply with feeling more of a personal connection to the subject matter. (I would hazard to guess it's the latter.) Still, Strout's incredible ability to develop characters, to know everything about them and to convey all of it by sharing a few, well-chosen pieces makes any of her work well-worth the read. I would, however, skip the afterword, which in my opinion, beats the reader over the head with what was already, quite clearly conveyed in the novel. Edit that out, and she's written another brilliant book.
