It's a good SF book, though it hasn't got any awards. The initial idea is one of the weirdest I've ever heard of: the seemingly omnipotent aliens tell us that they had committed a crime against humanity once and now wish to atone it; hence the Atoners is their name. They choose volunteers to become Witnesses, i.e. to go stellar, visit one of the seven double worlds where the descendants of the kidnapped humans live and see what the unknown crime's essence is. So far, so strange. It gets strangier when we understand that the Atoners took from us the ability to see our dead. Then... well, it's the story of a few humans after all: not some techno-thriller, not SF for the sake of SF, but very touching novel about people you've got to understand - and feel ultimate compassion.
