Hit and miss. Definitely liked this better than her novel. Love some of her sentences, really like a few of the stories. The first two were a little off for me, the middle ones were my favourite, her turns of phrase and images sometimes make me stop and imagine, or laugh at how odd (but human, and real) they are - I forget the name of the story, but the guy whose wife left him for someone that is like a man out of a book (he should have asked her which book?), and all he can do is read self-help books and talk about himself to his friend who isn't all that interested in love while she steadily gets drunk. The last story had some of the best lines in it, in reference to the title 'like life' that were kind of brilliant, but the story over all was depressing and she lost me in parts. Makes me interested to read more of her short stories.
Update
The more I think about this, the more I feel like I didn't give it the time it deserved. I was feeling the pressure to read more as I was falling further behind in my 52 book challenge, and I used this as an easy read to get one up on my list. And as a result, I didn't think that much of it, in fact it kind of annoyed me because some of the stories felt like they were requiring too much time, asking for too much from me. But now that a few weeks have passed, I find myself coming back to this and wishing I could remember it more clearly. Maybe I will have to re-read. I really do love the way she used the title and the idea of 'like life', as in something that is similar to life but not really there, and as opposed to love life, and there was another meaning too ... yeah looks like I'll be reading this one again.
