despite the title, this book is only sort-of about Satchel Paige. mostly it focuses on Emmet from Tuckwilla, AL, a ballplayer whose career is cut short in the first chapter. it's about Jim Crow, sharecropping, the Negro Leagues and, yes, Satchel Paige. it's a unique introduction to segregation, using the game of baseball to illustrate some hard truths. definitely good for readers both young and old.
