This was loaned to me by a friend who wanted me to read it just so she could get my opinion. So I slogged through it and I have to say if I had just randomly picked it up to read, I would have quit early on. I didn't like any of the characters at all. I thought the mom was selfish and vapid (and not a very good mother) and the dad was arrogant and self-absorbed. I was glad that they were dead (they are dead from page 1.) The sister Julia was self-absorbed and self-distructive (and irritating) and the other sister Ruthie was...well, she was okay but mostly pitiable.

Yet, as I said, I trudged onward and the last two-thirds of the book picked up and it was easier to finish. Still, not worth the effort of the first third. If I felt some perverse need to spend time with arrogant, self-absorbed people, I certainly wouldn't need to do it during my precious reading time.....
