This was my first experience of the author and any of his 'story' - though of course I'm familiar with the title Running with Scissors. Just reading the description of RWS made me instantly put it down every time - it consistently brought the 'ick' response. That said, I LOVED Possible Side Effects. I listened to it in the car and found it greatly entertaining and thought-provoking, in spite of many interruptions. I had NO expectations, but I thought the promo details on the jacket were clever.

This author is willing to be vulnerable and is astonishingly good as the narrator. I came to like him and admire his resilience. The question of whether or not his "story" as he tells it is fictionalized was, for me, only mildly distracting. After reading the book, I did think about that alot, but find it a completely separate issue - MY issue. If any substantial part of it is true, it's the world as I've only dared to imagine, and feel relieved to know of. Not that I LIKE the idea of so MANY crazy smart people, but because it offers an 'outlandish' series of narratives that are NOT COMPLETELY unbelievable. Burroughs 'covers' a lot of territory and offered this reader an experience that was more complext than expected.
