Lovely reading this again. This reminded me, of all things, of Lady Chatterley's Lover--the Yorkshire speech and the garden part. The plot devices are taken from Heidi, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. But it doesn't diminish the pleasure and the enchantment of this novel. The lack of political correctness is often jolting; Mary's impressions of her life in India are mostly negative.
