I am in awe of how much Ilona Andrews packs into the 250 or so pages of story. What I still don't love about the series is how we're still not sure WHAT Kate even is, or why she is SO special. In fact, a trend in this series for me is that you're in the thick of things, and still not entirely sure what is going on!! (battle scenes, sometimes hard to get grip on visuals, etc)

That said, it's great. I love that Kate, our kick ass heroine is super skilled and tough - but also is interested in doing the right thing, protecting innocents, and can cook. That she wishes she could have a pet or a relationship but is gone so much and all... well we get a glimpse that she'd like to have a family, but feels like she can't. Kate is a most excellent character and I love spending time in her world.

It's dark, it is gory at times, but I'm really glad this series was recommended to me. I look forward to seeing what is revealed in the next book.
