Alexie has such a great, disarming, honest voice. Junior totally endeared himself to me right from the start with his outrageous self-deprecation and hilarious confessions. I felt that Alexie tastefully balanced social commentary regarding Native American financial/social/physical health, against the universal need for a satisfying story. I don't think that the book soared to the transcendent thematic heights I expected for it--the climax revolves around the outcome of a basketball game--but for that same reason, I like that I can recommend it as an unpretentious, laid-back book for dudes.
