Greville Fane (short story) - 2 stars. All exposition and very little story. Yawn yawn."

Alina Four Meetings (short story) - 5 stars.

Don't ever remember being this affected by a short story before... Talk about tragedy...

Alina Greville Fane (short story) - 2 stars. All exposition and very little story. Yawn yawn.

Alina The Real Thing (short story) - 4 stars. Incredibly poignant and surprisingly sympathetic social commentary. However, the story also underlines the differences between modern and classic writing. In a modern short story, Henry James woudln't have had to explain the significance of the ending to us (which was absolutely perfect, by the way, the ideal "surprising, but inevitable").

So tell me, how many sentences does a Henry James short story contain? Because when each one is a paragraph or more long, it can't require too many!!:D

Alina LOL, Kate, the sentences ARE a bit of a challenge. However, I am enjoying this volume much more than expected (this is my first foray into the works of Mr. James).

Next are the novellas :)

I shouldn't pick on him. I've only read Portrait of a Lady. But he never uses 6 words where he can make it stretch to 50. I got pretty good at deconstructing long sentences full of double negatives too!

Alina The Pupil (nouvelle) - 2.5 stars. Meh
