This was a history of the Ottoman Empire. I had a hard time getting into it because the writing was incredibly flowery (e.g. "lo! the battle was lost. Oh, poor Suleyman the Magnificant!" except that I don't think he lost any battles) and it didn't quite go chronologically, so I had a hard time keeping straight Selim the Grim vs Selim the Sot, etc. But when I had an hour to sit down and actually read, I did get into it and ended up really enjoying it. I found myself actually disappointed when (spoiler alert!) the Empire fell.
