Awareness
by Anthony de Mello, J. Francis Stroud
by Anthony de Mello, J. Francis Stroud
This book is down to earth, which is its greatest strength. It appears to be a transcription of a series of talks about the power of awareness to transform our lives -- not by giving us what we want -- but by keeping us from suffering when bad things happen. At times, the author gets a bit cheesy and in at least one point appears to make a non-sequiter joke, but on the whole, this book is spot on. The only other thing I have mixed feelings about is what the author does not say, which is intentional. For instance, he avoids techniques and doesn't go into detail about what one finds. However, this is good because preconceived notions can stand in the way of awareness. On the other hand, it seems to leave the reader hanging.
