Newbery Medal-winning author Patricia MacLachlan has written a wonderful tale in an effort to describe what it is like to be a writer. Five close fourth-grade friends enjoy the classroom visits of Ms. Mirabel, an established writer who brings excitement and wonder to her teaching about the power of written words. The kids are inspired to write prose and to converse together about meaningful, current events in their lives - considering and changing their feelings and improving their capacity to handle life's ups and downs.

As a foreword to the novel, MacLachlan quotes Joan Didion: "I write to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear."

This would make a good booktalk selection for kids aged 8-10.
