This is my favorite book! It is one of the best novels you will EVER read outside of an author whose last name is not "Dickens" or "Tolstoy". I stand by that claim. Okay, maybe that's a bit much. But is one of the best "low" fiction books you can read.

Clavell has a way of capturing the spirit of Asia in his books, but explaining it to a western audience in a way that is not pandering. In particular he captures some of the good and bad aspects of Japanese culture (or what a westerner like myself would think was good and bad). And there are many life lessons to be learned in the book.

I quote this book on a daily basis (to the point where people are tired of it). But it is just so darn good!!
