lots of great characters in this book-- and one of them is a woman! I definitely wouldn't say this is as strong as wind up bird or kafka, but it was a pretty solid read. Murakami is the master of intrigue. Every chapter seems to end on a cliffhanger. There's some surrealism here but not as much as in his other books. as the book cover says, everything is just tinged with the sense that something is slightly off-kilter, that something has changed. the reading experience is kind of eerie. overall, a very hard book to put down, so do not begin reading if you're in the middle of busy work or need to catch up on sleep. The minute I put down this first book I picked up the second one, and am now anxiously awaiting the third ( reading this in chinese translation).

Niclas i'm glad its kind of an easy-read, which makes me wanna read the entire book in just one session, but at the same time i actually wanted this (and thought it was) something similar to kafka on the shore and wind up bird.
