My reaction to this series has more to do with my mood, instead of the quality of the books. They’re so quick, and so similar. If I’m in a mood for a laugh they work. If not, I zip through and move on.

“The Last Straw” got me laughing at first, but at some point I started plowing through the pages. “Who Licked Me?” gets my vote as funniest line.

As always, my favorite insights occur when Greg shows his guilt-free cruelty. He has a crush on Holly, a girl who hardly knows him. To make it worse, Holly writes a sweet yearbook note to Greg’s best friend Rowley. So when Greg finds Holly’s yearbook in his hands, he decides to do Rowley “a HUGE favor.” He forges Rowley’s signature to write Holly a brush-off note, thus eliminating any potential girlfriend rivalry. “I don’t want to see him get his heart stomped on.”

It’s also fun to see how jealous Greg gets of the boys who don’t have to play soccer. All in all, another successful 90 minutes of pinpoint jokes and Middle School traumas.
