I read this in a day and was not bored, but left unsatisfied. The descriptions of the Irish island Inis Muruach are lovely and the legends and culture intriguing. But the story is familiar - mother and daughter at war -- and Carey does little to add to age-old story. Although the voices feel authentic, we don't live long enough with the characters to grow close to them or really see how they might make the choices they do.
